Learning tennis can start at various ages. Some pick it up at a tender age of 3 – 4 years old. Others do not have the opportunity until later in life. Nevertheless, learning tennis is important for all ages, especially for kids for the following reasons and arguments:
Tennis is both aerobic and anaerobic in nature
If you are looking for a sport which can stimulate both the physical and mental aspect of oneself, try out tennis. Tennis will involve movements, stretching and the mind. For elite players, mental part is at least 80%.
Tennis keeps you mentally alert
Tennis certainly stimulates your mind by mixing your brain ability with your physical prowess in order to be able to hit the ball nicely.
Tennis improves your social network and self esteem.
We are social creatures by nature. Hence, the need to mingle and connect with other people. Tennis allows us to be social animals in a healthy way.
Tennis improves your mental toughness
Losing is an integral part of life. Tennis teaches one how to lose graciously and not be too affected by it. it also teaches mental toughness and how to win.
Tennis makes life fun for kids
Tennis enhances the mental and physical development of the child much faster than other sports. It helps in the motor skill development and mental maturity.
You could learn tennis and be a coach
Tennis can be a means for making a living for some. Ideally, a competitive player, once retired or being injured could decide to take some coaching courses and become a tennis coach. Coaching can be rewarding financially but more importantly it can also be beneficial emotionally as you see your charges grow up to be men or women of stature in society. For some, tennis could give you an extra bit of income while you are studying in university.

Why Roger Federer Is My Favorite Tennis Player

I admire many tennis professional players and am always inspired by their games. These professional players work very hard on and off court and their mentally and physically strong. I would always dream I can eventually be one of them; top 10 in the world with a grand slam title to my name. But this does not come easily. It takes hard work and countless hours of practice and on court it takes loads of sweat and determination to truly succeed. Although I like many players, my favorite player would be the number 1 in the world, Roger Federer. Roger Federer (born August 8, 1981) is a Swiss professional tennis player who, in 2004, became the world’s top tennis player.
I like Roger Federer because I have always looked up to him since young and I have always dreamt of being able to play like him and have so many great achievements. He is indeed a legend. Roger uses his brain to play and is very clever and smart on court. He is able to change his game during the match to suit different situations and is always finding ways to outsmart his opponent on court and force them to make errors. I can always learn so much from Roger’s game and how he plays on court is always so fascinating. Watching his matches never fail to amaze me at how well he makes use of the court to force errors off the opponents racket and how he plays so smart and effortlessly to win points. Federer uses his accurate serve to his advantage by using his serve to set up an opportunity for him to finish off the point. Moreover, his game is also unpredictable as he is an all-rounded player and can place the ball so well with such accuracy to create points for himself. The Swiss Maestro is also very good at changing the pace and rhythm of the ball to upset the tempo of the opponent, forcing errors from the opponent. He is also good at controlling his feelings and emotions and does not show it on court. Whenever he steps on court, he always plays so effortlessly and gracefully that it always amazes me.
I like Roger because he is a determined person and will work hard for success. He says ‘You always want to win. That is why you play tennis, because you love the sport and try to be the best you can at it.’ This shows that he is competitive and is hungry for success. This led him to win 17 Grand Slam titles breaking the previous all-time men’s record of 14 by Pete Sampras. Federer’s list of achievements is countless and the Swiss has managed to break many records in his years of playing in the professional circuit.
With all these achievements, the Swiss still remains humble and is willing to learn and work even harder to achieve more and scale greater heights. He displays great sportsmanship on court and is always gracious when he wins or loses. I am always so inspired by his attitude as he is truly a remarkable sportsman with great character and amazing achievements.
In conclusion, Roger Federer has indeed been an inspiration and I have learnt a lot from him character wise and tennis wise. He is truly an amazing sportsman and people should learn from his cool and composed attitude. I have been motivated by Roger’s competitive spirit and determined attitude to work harder on and off court. I will always admire Roger Federer and will keep learning from his game. He will always remain my favorite player of all time. Alle Federer!

How To Select A Tennis Racket
July 10, 2012 by Davis Pete
There are 7 steps to consider when selecting a tennis racket:
Step 1: One should select a tennis racket based on his or her level of tennis. For example: a beginner player should go for racket which is light, has an oversized head and is head heavy. An intermediate player can consider getting a racket that is flexible and slightly heavier as compared to a beginner’s racket. Finally, an advanced player should go for a racket that offers more control, heavier in weight, a smaller head frame and a balanced head.
Step 2: Rackets have differing weights and balance. A racket above 300 grams is considered heavy and is usually used by better players to generate more power with a slower swing. However, as a beginner, one should try for lighter rackets around 280 grams. This is not to tire your arms out.
Step 3: The head size of the racket is also another important key factor. A more advanced player should use a racket with a smaller head size, whereas a beginner or an intermediate player should preferably still use a racket with a larger head size. A larger head will provide more power as there is a larger sweet spot and hitting area. As mentioned in step 2, try getting a racket which is not too heavy initially. Anything heavy may be impairment and may cause the beginner to lose heart in the game.
Point 4: The racket strings are equally important as it allows you to hit the ball. Knowing the tension of the string helps you focus on power or control. High tension normally results in more control while lower tension will allow more power. For a beginner, it is better to have more control. Hence, maybe tighter strings may help.
Step 5: Grip size is very important too in your choice of a racket. If you have small hands, you should use a smaller grip. If your hands are bigger, you should use a bigger grip or you can also wrap an over grip around your racket handle. Grips are important as it prevents your racket from slipping when you play as a result of perspiration.
Step 6: The length of a racket. A longer racket allows more reach to the ball but it is harder to manoeuvre. A longer racket also gives one more power. It is a matter of physics here. For a child, he should start with a shorter racket and slowly progressing to an adult size.
Point 7: Always be prudent and buy the racket which suits your level of play.
Ultimately, always buy a racket which is suitable to your current playing ability. Consult your coach or someone more experience for advice. Enjoy your tennis and have some fun. Do not let your racket be a hindrance to your game.

If you child is good at tennis, do not be overly anxious over his performance. Let time and his own physical and mental development take care and form his tennis playing career. If he is good, some how things will fall into place.
Tip No 1: Try out your child by playing light balls or balloons with him or her. If he displays an ability to hit the balloons at a very young age, he shows the potential to have good hands for tennis. The ability to have good coordination is key as well.
Tip#2: Your child has a natural athletic ability i.e. he is able to move with good agility, without tripping over himself. Swiftness in feet is a plus when it comes to tennis as the game is played with much more power and speed these days. In tennis, it is the quickness over short distances which is crucial as opposed to long distance running.
Tip #3: Combining hands and eye will ensure your develops in his co-ordination. The eyes will always be key as its the first to see the ball. Thereafter, the brain has to process the sight and co-ordinate with the hands and legs. At a young age if the kid has better developed senses, he may go far in the future.
Tip#4: Teaching your child mental strength is not easy but it has to be done if your kid wants to excel in tennis. This is because tennis is very much won in the mind. Physical prowess is a given but someone with similar physical attributes will perform better if he is mentally calm and strong.
Tip#5: A tennis player must also work on his strength, speed and stamina. Strength can be done through light weights in the gym. Speed should be done one the court itself where short sprints are done. Stamina and endurance should be built up through running.
Tip#6: A sound tennis coach acts as a good mentor to the child. The coach must be technically sound as well as emotionally capable to support the tennis kid.
Tip#7: A general rule, is to let your child develop his tennis on his own abilities. You can provide the right environment but you should not push and punish the kid. The parent is there to provide support and not criticise.

How To Be Better At Tennis

Having natural ability to hit a tennis ball is a plus point. But like all things in life, one has to train hard to be better. No point just replying on your natural abilities only.
Tennis can be played as a singles or doubles match. Different techniques and rules will apply. Through time, the game of tennis has evolved into a more power game given the advent of new technology to make the tennis rackets. This is a far cry from the days of its origin in England.
The scoring within tennis also hasn’t changed much since its original conception, with only a few modern things involved, such as the tie-breaker, the use of technology to preview disputed calls, as well as the players being able to counter a call that has been called by the referee.
The quickest way to begin to play tennis well is to understand the rules and concept of tennis. This is often accomplished by having a tennis lesson with a qualified tennis coach, by watching games of adult tennis matches, having private tennis lessons, or taking group tennis lessons. There are even kids’ lessons available for those who want to start their child on a sport at a tender age.
Apart from getting tennis lessons from a coach, one can also seek more information and quidance from tennis books from the library, videos etc.
Having a discipline mind and character is important if one wishes to succeed in playing tennis at higher levels. The demands of training is more mental than physical at the competitive stage.
Hiring a tennis coach to help you improve your tennis game is an important step towards bettering yourself. A qualified and experience tennis coach can guide you towards improving your technique. Of course, there are many ways of hitting the same stroke but there will always be certain fundamental techniques which cannot be left out. All good coaches must also have a good eye in discerning the student’s errors and must be able to provide practical solutions.
Seek out your friends who play tennis. Practice and learn from them. If you are new to the game, be generous and try to offer something in return for your friends’ time to play with you.
Watching tennis tournaments and how the professional tennis players go about their sport is another good way of learning the game. Watching video clips of forehands, backhands etc is another good way of picking up tips on various tennis techniques.
Perusing tennis manuals, magazines and books is also a good way to learn and better your tennis skills.
As one learns something new, one must be open to what the tennis coach imparts to you.
Learning and practicing are certainly very important in improving your tennis game. However, another equally critical area is to improve on your own physical fitness. This entails improving your stamina through running, skipping and improving your strength through gym work outs. Care must be taken to ensure your do the relevant weight-related routines which are suitable for tennis.
Lastly, make sure you enjoy the game as you practice. Do not put undue pressure on yourself. It is supposed to make you happy and not sad. An important facet is to also be aware that not every new beginning or even advanced player makes it to Wimbledon, which is the international tennis championship that is held in England every year. There is nothing wrong with playing just for the sake of playing and that of learning something new.

Main Reasons For Adult Group Tennis Lessons
May 1, 2012 by Davis Pete

Individual tennis lessons serves its own purpose of providing a dedicated training session for the student. The attention span is entirely on you, as a student. Of course, you will stand to gain more and learn the tennis techniques faster. However, learning tennis alone can be tiring and a bit boring maybe. Therefore, group tennis lessons can be more fun.

Playing and learning tennis in a group allow one to mingle and socialise with other people. This is an important way of getting to know people. Apart from having something in common, learning tennis together can enhance one’s self esteem as well. One will also be spurred on by others when learning tennis together.
The best part of the class is the camaraderie that can develop. Beginners have been known to encourage and cheer on the others in the class, making the whole experience a lot of fun. Believe it or not, but learning in a group can make mastering the basics much easier. Those just starting out in tennis have both the rules and the techniques of the game to master. It’s easier in a group as everyone is learning the same thing at the same pace, and again, folks can observe how others do something and learn from watching..
The competitive instinct in all of us is brought out to the fore when we have other people around us. There is that natural desire to out-play each other, to show that you are better than another person. This competitive streak in us, if harnessed correctly, will spur each person to improve faster and focus better.
Private individual lessons will tend to be more strenuous as there is only one student. This may be a deterrent to someone who is not fit. Therefore, group tennis lessons can be more accommodative for someone who is has not exercised for a while.
Adults need a way to easily connect and relate to others on a social level. Taking tennis lessons with a group of adults allows for exercise and a chance to meet new people. The benefits are definitely worth the cost of the lesson.
Given the high cost of living in Singapore, learning tennis in a group environment would reduce the cost for each individual as the per lesson fee is spread out across more people. In Singapore, each person can expect to pay from $20-25 per hour for a group lesson as compared to having to fork out at least $70 per hour for private individual lessons.
Another positive benefit of learning tennis in a group setting is the physical security it provides i.e. safety in numbers. This is more so if you are a lady and having private lessons with a coach in a rather private tennis court. It is just something to consider if you are a lady and is not so sure about the ‘private’ situation you are putting yourself into.
Normally, adult group tennis lessons are conducted after hours whereby more people can participate. This could be seen as positive to some but negative to others as the lessons conducted may not be suitable for some, especially adult parents who have to return home to their family. Hence, perhaps, private lessons may be more suitable from a timing point of view.
